Summary

In his New York Times bestselling book Courage is Calling, author Ryan Holiday made the Stoic case for a bold and brave life。 In this much-anticipated second book of his Stoic Virtue series, Holiday celebrates the awesome power of self-discipline and those who have seized it。

To master anything, one must first master themselves–one’s emotions, one’s thoughts, one’s actions。 Eisenhower famously said that freedom is really the opportunity to practice self-discipline。 Cicero called the virtue of temperance the polish of life。 Without boundaries and restraint, we risk not only failing to meet our full potential and jeopardizing what we have achieved, but we ensure misery and shame。 In a world of temptation and excess, this ancient idea is more urgent than ever。

In Discipline is Destiny, Holiday draws on the stories of historical figures we can emulate as pillars of self-discipline, including Lou Gehrig, Queen Elizabeth II, boxer Floyd Patterson, Marcus Aurelius and writer Toni Morrison, as well as the cautionary tales of Napoleon, F。 Scott Fitzgerald and Babe Ruth。 Through these engaging examples, Holiday teaches readers the power of self-discipline and balance, and cautions against the perils of extravagance and hedonism。

At the heart of Stoicism are four simple virtues: courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom。 Everything else, the Stoics believed, flows from them。 Discipline is Destiny will guide readers down the path to self-mastery, upon which all the other virtues depend。 Discipline is predictive。 You cannot succeed without it。 And if you lose it, you cannot help but bring yourself failure and unhappiness。

Demasiadas historias, esperaba mas tecnicismo sobre la disciplina que historias de antiguos reyes y personajes en la historia。

Good, but a bit lightweight in that I read it a few weeks ago and can't today remember much of it at all。 The book doesn't have a ton of staying power -- it's a Robert Greene-style repackaging of stories and wisdom on the theme of self discipline, but I feel that it doesn't break enough new ground on its own。 I'd have liked it to explore this topic more deeply, and would've trusted it more if it had questioned some of its own fundamental assumptions (e。g。, the assumption that "achievement" by co Good, but a bit lightweight in that I read it a few weeks ago and can't today remember much of it at all。 The book doesn't have a ton of staying power -- it's a Robert Greene-style repackaging of stories and wisdom on the theme of self discipline, but I feel that it doesn't break enough new ground on its own。 I'd have liked it to explore this topic more deeply, and would've trusted it more if it had questioned some of its own fundamental assumptions (e。g。, the assumption that "achievement" by common yardsticks is the brass ring we should all be reaching for)。 At times, this felt like the book version of "struggle porn" that floods YouTube and Tiktok and that doesn't necessarily result in a positive relationship to other values that are less materialistic。 。。。more

This book describes all diverse examples of the discipline in multiple areas (politician, philosopher, etc。)。 People will need discipline regardless of their environment (rich or poor)。 There will be problems in life, and we need the discipline to be mindful of our actions and lifestyle。 Social status means nothing to discipline, but discipline puts our life in order。 Understanding why we need discipline in our life will define our future。

Quick and digestible audiobook as each chapter is short and sweet。 The only unfortunate part was that most of the examples were mostly of men。 The notable women were Queen Elizabeth, RBG, and Anne Frank。 He references Aurelius, Seneca, Churchill, Kennedy, MLK Jr, and other sports athletes as examples of their regimen and discipline。 Very motivational book that will definitely help to get you up on your feet and focused。 As with self-help books, there were many "shoulds"and not as many action ite Quick and digestible audiobook as each chapter is short and sweet。 The only unfortunate part was that most of the examples were mostly of men。 The notable women were Queen Elizabeth, RBG, and Anne Frank。 He references Aurelius, Seneca, Churchill, Kennedy, MLK Jr, and other sports athletes as examples of their regimen and discipline。 Very motivational book that will definitely help to get you up on your feet and focused。 As with self-help books, there were many "shoulds"and not as many action items for behavior change。 Now I know what I "should" do, but it's always easier said than done。 However, he provides many good examples to model oneself after。 Honestly, not my favorite of his series on Stoicism, but insightful nonetheless。 。。。more

This book was trash。 In the spirit of its central subject I forced myself to finish it through gritted teeth。 Apparently Holiday is writing one of these a year, and you can tell… He might have the discipline to write everyday, but that doesn’t mean what he produces is any good。 Disappointing as I’ve liked some of his other books—but that’s okay, I’ll still keep reading that garbage。

This is a great instructive and inspirational book! It is made up of many small chapters。 I read one or two chapters each night before bed。Most of us have no discipline which is why our lives may be unsatisfactory。 I don't know when it happened, but over the decades it has become popular to be un-disciplined and we pay the price for it by "making dust" instead of "making a life"。 This book tells of people (famous and less famous) who refuse to blame others for their limitations and misfortunes。 This is a great instructive and inspirational book! This was my audio book for the last few weeks。 It is quite extreme and intense but I personally found it very inspiring。 Inspiring us to be better in pretty much every way, and calling on examples past and present of how people were good examples of stamina, discipline, getting through life in the most dignified and respectable ways。 The only big draw back was the “afterword” in which the authors really blew his own trumpet about how well he was doing things and in writing the book。 This really This was my audio book for the last few weeks。 It is quite extreme and intense but I personally found it very inspiring。 Inspiring us to be better in pretty much every way, and calling on examples past and present of how people were good examples of stamina, discipline, getting through life in the most dignified and respectable ways。 The only big draw back was the “afterword” in which the authors really blew his own trumpet about how well he was doing things and in writing the book。 This really took away from his message of others as examples, but it was a book that did inspire me and that that I would listen to again sometime when needing a bit of intellectual support in the pursuit of trying to live a good life。 。。。more

This is my 3rd (or 4th?) Ryan Holiday book and my least favorite。 I love stoicism and the stoics。 I was not so fond of certain political references and examples given in this book。 I'm now clear on the author's political views, but that's not what at all I was seeking。 Unfortunate。Theme: master yourself。 Then all else will be easy。 This, I can agree with。 This is my 3rd (or 4th?) As Holiday points out quoting Aristotle, discipline is about human flourishing。 However, to get there, you must first cultivate it and then live it。

A good listen & a great challenge to be more disciplined! I appreciated that this book wasn’t just a list of good things to do in theory (not a fan of those kind of self help books) but each point was supported with real life examples from real humans。

Great read if you like to read what has essentially been re-hashed a hundred times , just with a shiny new cover。Get a better editor bro! At least 5 mistakes and I still have a few pages left。 Also did you have to throw your Trump-hatred into the book? Seems like something an…。undisciplined writer/thinker would do 😂

Another great addition to the Holiday library。 Afterword was especially nice in describing his own writing practice and the relevant struggles he experiences in the process of creating these works, which is much like putting together a large puzzle which most of the time consists of grinding out the placement of each element that has been gathered over many years of reading, journaling, and writing other things。

Cool read, small chapters allow for pauses to think through what was being learned/read。 A bit repetitive from time to time, especially towards the middle and end of the book。 Missing a bit more read about stoic philosophers and but the comparisons to modern life role models is a great idea, helps to understand and has a good balance in selection of them too。
